About the Club

The bird club was formed over 20 years ago as a forum for birders in and around Northamptonshire. The little owl (Athene noctua) was adopted as the bird club`s emblem as it was introduced into Britain by Lord Lilford, a renowned local ornithologist in the 19th century.

The club holds meetings on the first Wednesday of each calendar month at 19:30 at Moulton Sports Complex, Pound Lane, Moulton, Northants. This is part of the Moulton School campus. Access is opposite the Telegraph pub on Pound Lane. Most indoor meetings consist of a talk and slide show, mostly about birds but we do try to have one meeting a year devoted to other wildlife.

We also hold regular car trips. These are usually around the last Sunday of the month. Locations vary but a fair number are to the Norfolk coast as it is convenient and usually good birding. We try to organise the trips with club members who are happy to drive. Most trips depart Northants around 6- 6:30 am and get back early evening.

We also try to run a foreign birding trip each year. Recent trips have been to Panama, South Africa, Extramadura, Poland, Spanish Pyrennees and central France. The last trip was to Panama to a couple of rain forest lodges in March 2007.

If you are a wildlife photographer then you can submit digital to our annual photo competition in December/January. They must have been taken in the current year and bird photos must be taken away from the nest.

Many club members are also involved in volunteering at local nature reserves. We have a good relationship with the Pitsford Reserve Management Team, where some of our members take part in the constant effort ringing site, breeding bird surveys and wetland bird counts. Other club members are associated with Summer Leys and Titchmarsh Reserves.

The club welcomes new members of all ages and birding abilities. We try to ensure there is a variety of activities to suit all birding interests. If you are interested, why not come along to a meeting and see what it is like. You may attend two meetings before we ask you to join the club.

Membership provides you with monthly meetings and a monthly newsletter; ability to join in the car trips and foreign birding events and the chance to meet and converse with fellow birders.
